A strong finish in late January and February has been a blessing to Shrimpers and packers along the gulf! After seeing low landings of medium to small shrimp for peeling over the 2021 spring and fall fishery our facilities were pleased to see an abundance of peeling shrimp in the nets over the winter months. These landings aided in softening prices on smaller size shrimp for the Lenten season! As we move into the off-season facilities and boats will take some time to retool and refit in anticipation of a bountiful new season opening in May.

A much needed 2021 Texas Brown season opened on July 15th and we are beginning to see positive production from boats landing mostly small to mid range shrimp. This brings relief as the overall demand for wild caught shrimp has outweighed supply brought by the Louisiana spring shrimp season earlier this year. We are looking forward as well to the opening of the Louisiana Fall shrimp season that is anticipated to open mid-August. The combination of the two seasons being in fill swing should have positive affects on the overall Domestic shrimp market and bring stability to supply and pricing. Weather your customers are dinning at home or in a restaurants we look forward to providing you with the best Wild Caught American Shrimp on the market.

The mid-July opening of Texas brown shrimp season brought much-needed relief industry-wide! At Paul Piazza & Son, we are working diligently to process and pack these new season shrimp and get our product out to foodservice and retailers across the U.S. as soon as possible. With retail shrimp consumption growing and more restaurants reopening, it is important to us that we meet our customers’ needs with the highest quality brown shrimp on the market.

Waters were previously closed in mid-May in order to protect the brown shrimp and let them grow to market size as they migrated to the Gulf of Mexico. But now, they’re the perfect size and ready for catching!

Brown shrimp are known for their flavorful, slightly salty taste with a firm texture. One of the most popular ways to cook shrimp in the world is with a barbecue shrimp recipe. There are many different varieties, but we think ours is one of the best. Click for our recipe here! Paul Piazza Barbecue Shrimp Recipe.

May 13, 2020 New Orleans, Louisiana– Paul Piazza & Son, Inc., one of the largest, processors of wild-caught Gulf of Mexico shrimp in the country, launched a direct-to-consumer buying portal today in response to increased requests from consumers to buy its wild-caught shrimp products. The company is offering its most popular sizes and product forms with free shipping from Louisiana.

“We began to see a particularly high number of requests on our website coming from areas in which we aren’t already selling through retailers,” said Andy Neely, vice-president of sales. “The Paul Piazza brands can be found in many areas of the U.S. through our valued retail partners, but there are places where people can’t buy our shrimp in a store or want a broader product selection.”

Shrimp are the most popular seafood item in America, and the demand for healthy, sustainable, wild-caught shrimp, has also increased as shortages of beef, pork and poultry have surfaced due to plant shutdowns and higher consumer demand.

Shrimp processors like Piazza, which has received excellent SQF (Safe Quality Food) ratings for food safety, have avoided such problems and have an ample supply of wild-caught Gulf shrimp ready to be shipped to consumers, restaurants and retailers anywhere in the U.S.

The company also believes demand has increased because consumers are making a more conscious effort to buy American.

“Imported, pond-raised, typically less flavorful shrimp are much easier to obtain in a store. They are a different variety and are generally cheaper,” says Garet Hutchinson, regional manager and corporate chef. “But there’s nothing like knowing that your shrimp came from our American waters and from hardworking American shrimpers.”

Paul Piazza & Son Seafood, Inc. has been in business for more than 125 years, and the family business has adapted to crises and changes in the market before. In 2005, the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina led to Paul Piazza & Son’s largest and most strategic expansion to date.

Those who wish to order direct online as well as restaurants and grocery stores looking to source premium, wild-caught Gulf shrimp can contact Paul Piazza & Son Seafood by visiting PaulPiazza.com. The site also features more about the company’s background, history and operations, shrimp sustainability, the health benefits of wild-caught shrimp and its most popular page — recipes.

“The quality and rich taste of premium, wild-caught Gulf shrimp make them a real delicacy,” adds Neely. “And now anyone can get them sent straight to their door.”

Paul Piazza & Son, Inc. is proud to have achieved excellent-rated SQF certification scores at both of our processing plants in Louisiana – an honor earned by those food manufacturers who meet the highest standards in the industry.

SQF is a food safety standard which actually links to an international standard called GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative).

The program is described as follows on the SQF Institute website, “The Safe Quality Food (SQF) Program is a rigorous and credible food safety and quality program that is recognized by retailers, brand owners, and food service providers world-wide. Recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), the SQF family of food safety and quality codes are designed to meet industry, customer, and regulatory requirements for all sectors of the food supply chain – from the [ocean] all the way to the retail stores.”

Essentially, a high SQF certification score (and, in our case, the highest SQF certification score) is the shining stamp of approval that a food manufacturing or processing business operates at the highest levels. In our case, our shrimp are caught in the rich waters of the Gulf of Mexico, are sustainably hauled onto our boats, and are processed at our always properly-managed factories before they are served on your plates.

“It’s not about just trying to get that one high score for that one audit,” Kory Echelard, head of quality control for Paul Piazza & Son, said. “It’s about using those skills and that knowledge from the SQF Program and instilling that into the process every day.”

Echelard said that after 30 years in the business, with around 150 employees to manage, one learns what to expect from the audit and that the most important thing is making sure that both plants on a day-to-day basis always maintain a standard of cleanliness and sanitization: the goal in mind is to always be like that so that by the time the SQF certification rolls around, it’s an easy process because you’ve always been implementing it.

The importance for a consumer is best summed up in this statement from the SQF website:

“SQF Certification offers a comprehensive solution that helps you verify and demonstrate that food safety and quality controls have been effectively implemented, validated, and monitored. The results of a strong SQF Program are safe products, brand confidence, and reassured customers.”

The Paul Piazza family wouldn’t have it any other way. Our SQF certification assures our customers that our shrimp have premium quality and consistency time after time while meeting the most rigorous standards for food safety. Paul Piazza. The Perfect Shrimp. The Perfect Partner.

If you are having to think strategically about food supplies that will last in the freezer, don’t forget about shrimp. Many consumers are reporting that traditional go-to proteins, beef, chicken and pork are in shorter supply in the grocery stores. But we wanted to remind everyone to remember shrimp – especially our wild-caught, Gulf of Mexico shrimp.

Our Paul Piazza wild-caught, Gulf of Mexico shrimp, available in several package sizes and varieties, will last in the freezer and supply your family with many great meals.

We have learned over the years that one reason people don’t automatically go to the “frozen shrimp” in their grocery is because they are either not top of mind, or they simply don’t cook shrimp as often and are less familiar with handling. Shrimp just simply are not as top of mind as other protein sources.

Our Paul Piazza & Son website has a great RECIPE PAGE full of delicious meal ideas using shrimp created by our own in-house culinary team.

You’ll find Paul Piazza & Son shrimp are available at a variety of local grocery stores throughout the U.S., just look for our packaging in the frozen food aisles of stores in these grocery chains. If you click on the store chain name, it will take you to a page which has locations for each chain:

According to SeafoodSource, shrimp are the most popular seafood in the U.S. Out of the total 16.1 pounds of seafood Americans consumed per capita in 2018, 4.6 pounds of that were shrimp alone – the highest on the list by far – meaning that the average American eats 4.6 pounds of shrimp every year!

Of course any shrimp lover will tell you that shrimp taste great, but many don’t realize they are also a healthier protein than many other alternatives. You can see a variety of benefits here on our Nutrition page. They are low in saturated fat and high in omega-3 fatty acids. In fact this article lists 8 benefits of omega-3’s, which include fighting depression and anxiety, improving eye health and promoting brain health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has left us all eating out less and cooking at home more. Depending on restocking schedules, sometimes healthy alternatives may not be in plain sight. Just remember to check the frozen food aisles – even when the beef, chicken and pork are cleared out, we are continuing to supply our retailers with stocks of our frozen shrimp.

With many of us working from home and making fewer trips to the grocery, you can make the most of our next trip by picking up some of our frozen shrimp, which will keep up to two years under the proper freezer temperatures.

With their deliciously distinct, naturally flavorful, and subtly sweet taste, our wild-caught shrimp are perfectly adapted for a variety of dishes – including with dozens of recipes available on our RECIPE PAGE.
